Pressure Equipment
Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC
The Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) 97/23/EC applies to the design, manufacturing and conformity evaluation process of Pressure Equipment, as well as Pressure Equipment Assemblies. The maximum allowable design pressure must be greater than 0.5 bar.
Covered under the general term "Pressure Equipment" are pressure vessels, steam boilers, exchangers, tubing (pipe) and pressure accessories, as well as devices under pressure. Also included are all parts and products that are attached to pressurized parts (i.e., flanges, nozzles, lifting parts, fast-connectors, etc).

According to Article 20, the PED became applicable on November 29, 1999. Since then, each European member state had the responsibility to implement and adopt the PED into national law by May 29, 2002. Manufacturers and/or final users of pressure equipment had to decide if their product meets the PED requirements or the national code of the country in which the product will be placed. However, if the member state adopts the PED into national law, no selection between PED and national code is possible; in this case, the PED will be mandated.
Products covered include:
- Pressure Vessels
- Heat Exchangers
- Pressure Gas Cylinders
- Steam Boilers
- Pipeline Equipment
- Storage Tanks
- Pressure Relief Devices
- Valves, Regulators, etc.
- and more
Directives & Standards:
Pressure Equipment Certification
top
When pressure equipment meets the requirements imposed in the Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC), the CE Mark shall be affixed to such equipment. The "way" to the CE Marking is outlined in Article 10 and Annex III of the directive. This is called the Conformity Assessment.
The flowchart shows possible activities involved in the conformity assessment procedure.
- 1.Facility Certification
- 2.Design Analysis and Approval
- 3.Welding Procedure Approval *
- 4.Welding Operator Certification *
- 5.Material Testing and Certification
- 6.Final Equipment Inspection & Certification
*note: depending on product type and category
Transportable Pressure Equipment Directive (TPED) 99/36/EC
top
This directive ensures the free movement of transportable pressure equipment containing dangerous goods within the European Community by road and by rail. The TPED applies to the design, manufacture and conformity assessment of transportable pressure equipment, such as cylinders, tubes and cryogenic receptacles, as well as tanks or tank vehicles. It also covers market placements, reintroductions into service and surveillance inspections.
TUV Rheinland is pleased to announce that it can provide full certification under the Transportable Pressure Equipment Directive (TPED) for all modules, including H and H1. For companies with implemented Quality Assurance programs, Moduels H/H1 provide the most efficient way to maintain serial production of transportable pressure equipment for the EU.
Material Technology Scope

TUV Rheinland of North America, Inc. is certifying steel mills and foundries according to German Code Requirements (e.g. Pressure and Steam Boiler Codes). In addition, we test, approve and certify materials/products in accordance with German, European and other international requirements and codes.
teel Mill and Foundry approvals are often related to the Pressure Equipment industry. Steels and castings must meet European codes and requirements, in order to be acceptable for the manufacture of pressure equipment. Only approved mills/foundries can issue suitable certification. If steel has been purchased from non-approved companies or if it is not certified in accordance with (for instance) German codes and requirements, TUV Rheinland of North America, Inc. can individually test and certify such products.
Materials/Products Covered Include:
- Ferrous Materials
- Non-Ferrous Materials
- Plate/Sheet/Coil
- Pipe/Tube
- Bar
- Wire
- Casting
- Forging
- Extrusion Products
- Sintered Products
- Welding Consumables
- and more
