The WEEE (Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive 2002/96/EC and RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directive 2002/95/EC are having an enormous impact on the electronics industry (anyone who produces or distributes electronic or electrical goods). Manufacturers of products from computers to IT equipment to clock radios to toasters could find themselves banned from selling their product in the European market if they do not comply to these new directives by the specific dates.

These products are required to meet these directives by:

  • August 13, 2005 for WEEE, and
  • July 1, 2006 for RoHS

The following product categories will be impacted by these new directives:

  • Large and small appliances
  • IT & telecommunications equipment
  • Consumer equipment
  • Lighting equipment
  • Electronic tools (except large-scale stationary industrial tools)
  • Toys, leisure and sports equipment
  • Medical devices (except all implanted and infected products)
  • Monitoring and control instruments
  • Automatic dispensers

To ensure compliance, companies should start to plan how they will conform to these directives now.

NEW RoHS Mark

TUV Rheinland now offers labeling for RoHS compliance which allows system manufacturers prove to the EU that they are RoHS compliant and using RoHS compliant components in the manufacture of their product.

RoHS

The RoHS directive will take effect in July 2006 and requires companies to eliminate six known banned substances from their products: lead, mercury, cadium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyl either (PBDE). The directive goes hand-in-hand with the WEEE (Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive which required all companies to file recycling plans by July 2005 for their electrical products that were on sale in Europe.

The RoHS Directive is a substantial challenge for many companies, especially for manufacturers of appliances, IT and telecommunication equipment, lighting, electronic tools, monitoring and control instruments, medical devices and toy and leisure products. TUV Rheinland eliminates the concern of complying with the RoHS Directives and focus on revenue generation.
